Eastern Delights

Since time immemorial, the great continent of Europe has had a fixation on the Orient and all the exotic mysticism that it evokes. Our programme examines various composer's explorations of the East. Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade showcases the artistry of our leader, Martin Usher, portraying the voice of Scherazade, the beguiling narrator of the One Thousand and One Nights. From the bustling bazaars of Baghdad to the high seas on Sinbad's ship, Rimsky-Korsakov's evocation of this intoxicating world brims with colour and tuneful elegance.

The Sheffield Symphony Orchestra welcomes internationally acclaimed mezzo soprano, New Zealand-born Sarah Castle to explore another part of the Orient with Berlioz's depiction of Cleopatra's death in his masterful work for voice and orchestra, Cleopatre. Mozart's irrepressible overture to his Abduction from the Seraglio opens proceedings, complete with its own Turkish March.
