Wagner Flying Dutchman Overture
Strauss Four Last Songs
Elgar Symphony no. 2

Laura SheerinThe shadow of the great composer, Richard Wagner looms large of much of the music that came after him. From early works, such as the Flying Dutchman, Wagner developed a philosophy of music and pioneering harmonic and instrumental palette that influenced none other than the young Richard Strauss and Edward Elgar. To sing Strauss’ sublime Four Last Songs, the Sheffield Symphony welcomes up-and-coming Irish soprano, Laura Sheerin, to realise the work’s myriad colours and emotions. Britain’s answer to Strauss, Elgar also incorporated Wagner’s innovations into his own uniquely British voice. Widely thought to have revived English composition, strangely quiet since Purcell, Elgar displays his lyricism, passion and mastery in his Second Symphony.
