Rimsky-Korsakov Sinfonietta on Russian Themes
Stravinsky Symphonies of wind instruments
Tchaikovsky Symphony no. 4
Sinead Hayes, conductor

Wagner - RachmaninovThree different ways of writing symphonies in Russia, with vastly different results. Rimsky-Korsakov’s Sinfonietta is light easy listening (though none the worse for that); the Stravinsky is a wonderful juxtaposition of unconnected phrases which somehow cohere in a short but powerful musical utterance; Tchaikovsky’s 4th Symphony is a strong romantic ‘darkness to light’ symphony: starting from the depths of human despair it ends in an apotheosis of joy.
