| Mozart | Symphony no. 39 |
| Schubert | Symphony no. 8 (9) in C major 'The Great' |
Two remarkable classical symphonies: Mozart no. 39 being the first of three composed in the summer of 1788: unusually for Mozart the orchestra contains no oboes; instead the clarinets are prominently featured. Schubert’s ‘Great C major’ symphony was completed in 1828, the last year of his short life (he died aged 31). It’s one of the longer symphonies in the repertoire; but it’s also one of the most lyrical and good-humoured.
