No music is more central to the orchestral repertoire than the four symphonies of Brahms, and this concert offers the chance to hear two of them. Perhaps the third symphony is less familiar than the others, painted as it is in mellow autumnal colours: the first symphony, from its imposing opening to its joyous finale, never ceases to thrill with its rugged determination alternating with warm lyricism.
