| Elgar | Violin Concerto Geoffrey Allan, violin |
| Vaughan Williams | Symphony no. 5 |
Two English masterpieces: the Elgar completed in 1910, probably the longest violin concerto regularly played, juxtaposing intimate and virtuosic moments in the solo violin with a nostalgic grandeur in the orchestra. Vaughan Williams’ fifth symphony dates from 1943, and despite its appearance at the height of World War II the music has a profound serenity, reflecting the composer’s deep love of Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress, which he was subsequently to turn into an opera.
