Schubert Symphony no. 8 'Unfinished'
Reger Variations and Fugue on a theme of Mozart
Liszt Les Préludes
Franz Schmidt Variations on a Hussar's song

An evening of Austro-German romantic music spanning nearly 110 years. Schubert's 'Unfinished' Symphony is a perennial favourite of all music-lovers: Reger's 'Mozart' Variations are based on a theme from Mozart's A major piano sonata, and take Mozart's original idea into harmonic and orchestral textures which Mozart could not have imagined. Liszt's 'Les Préludes' is a symphonic poem, loosely based around the poems of Alfonse-Marie Lamartine - though less often heard nowadays this tuneful and colourful piece was once a staple of the orchestral repertoire. The unjustly neglected Austrian composer Franz Schmidt was once described by Mahler as 'the most musical man in Vienna' - these delightful variations on a jolly folk-song should be easy listening for anyone acquainted with Elgar's 'Enigma' and Dohnányi's 'Variations on a Nursery Tune'
