Saturday 4th February - 7.30pmSt Mark's, Broomhill
| Dvorak | Symphony no. 9 'From the New World' |
| Delius | Appalachia |
Two European composers who spent time living and working in the United States, turning their transatlantic experiences into music. The 'New World Symphony' hardly needs any introduction; the Delius is a set of orchestral variations on a folksong of African-American origin, and was inspired by his encounters with the former slaves of Jacksonville, Florida, who at the time of Delius's visit (1884-86) had only recently been emancipated. As the work progresses, there are various choral interjections, culminating in a beautiful setting of the folksong for the unaccompanied choir. Appalachia requires a huge orchestra (six horns, two harps), and the SSO is delighted that our performance is being generously sponsored by the Delius Trust.
